The original Swan Hellenic launched in 1954 as the world's first dedicated cultural expedition line, with archaeologists and historians leading "study cruises" through the classical Mediterranean. The original company closed in 2017 but the brand was relaunched in 2022 with three new ice-strengthened expedition ships.
The modern line preserves the original ethos: every voyage is themed around culture, history, archaeology or natural history, accompanied by a team of specialist lecturers. The clientele is older, well-travelled and intellectually curious. Operations are small and intimate.
