A Seychelles cruise calls at one of the most pristine and photogenic island groups on Earth. Its 115 granite and coral islands are scattered north of Madagascar across the western Indian Ocean. Ships call at Mahe’s capital Victoria, one of the world’s smallest, and at Praslin for the legendary coco de mer palm. La Digue adds its ox-cart pace and the iconic granite-and-turquoise beaches of Anse Source d’Argent. This is luxury-leaning destination cruising at its finest.

For cruisers, the Seychelles delivers world-leading beaches in a setting of dramatic granite boulders, lush forests, and exceptional snorkeling and diving. Mahe blends a small, easy capital with stunning beaches like Beau Vallon. Praslin’s Vallée de Mai UNESCO reserve holds the only natural coco de mer palm forest, and La Digue is famous for its photogenic beaches reached by bicycle. For most cruisers, this is one of the most beautiful Indian Ocean stops anywhere.

Best Time to Cruise

The Seychelles has year-round cruise access thanks to its near-equatorial location and warm sea temperatures, but the year splits into two trade-wind seasons. The northeast monsoon (December to March) brings calm seas but more humidity and occasional showers. The southeast monsoon (May to September) brings cooler, drier, and windier weather.

The best months sit in the transition shoulders of April-May and September-November, when the seas are calm, the weather is dry, and the diving visibility is at its best. Peak cruise traffic comes in December-February. Browse the latest Africa cruise deals for shoulder-season sailings.

There is genuinely no bad time to cruise the Seychelles, given the year-round warmth and the limited cyclone risk (the islands sit outside the main cyclone belt). The calmest, driest, and clearest-water months are April, May, October, and November, though. For most cruisers, the Seychelles will be a multi-day part of a larger Indian Ocean voyage.

Top Cruise Ports

Mahe (Victoria)

Mahe, the largest Seychelles island, is the main cruise port, with ships docking at Victoria, the small, walkable capital. The island combines a compact city, dramatic mountain interior, and spectacular beaches all within a short drive.

The draws are the colorful Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market, the miniature Big Ben clock tower, the National Botanical Garden, the spectacular Beau Vallon beach, and Morne Seychellois National Park. Insider tip: Anse Intendance and Petite Anse on Mahe’s south coast are among the most beautiful beaches on the island, and far less crowded than Beau Vallon. Consider them if your port day allows a longer drive or a taxi-based beach day.

Praslin and La Digue

Praslin, the second-largest island, and tiny La Digue, both reached on longer itineraries that include inter-island sailing, are the headline scenic stops. Cruise ships may call directly at Praslin or transfer passengers across.

The draws are Praslin’s UNESCO-listed Vallée de Mai, the only natural coco de mer forest, and Anse Lazio beach. La Digue’s iconic Anse Source d’Argent is often called the most photographed beach in the world. Insider tip: La Digue, with cars all but absent and bicycles or ox-carts the main transport, delivers one of the most distinctive small-island experiences anywhere. Prioritize a half-day there over more beach time on Mahe if your itinerary includes both.

Which Cruise Lines Sail Here

The Seychelles is a luxury-leaning Indian Ocean destination, drawing primarily premium and luxury lines. The luxury lines dominate. Silversea, Oceania, Azamara, Seabourn, Regent, Crystal, and Ponant all include the Seychelles on Indian Ocean grand voyages and dedicated regional itineraries.

The expedition lines also call, with smaller ships well-suited to inter-island navigation between Mahe, Praslin, and La Digue. Some include extensive overnight stays for full island access.

Some mass-market lines occasionally call, with MSC and Costa including the Seychelles on Indian Ocean regional deployments, often the best value when available. Most Seychelles cruises come as part of 14-to-21-night Indian Ocean grand voyages or 7-to-10-night dedicated Mascarene and Seychelles itineraries. Read our Silversea review, our Oceania review, and our Ponant review to match a line to your trip.

Shore Excursion Tips

The Seychelles is easy for independent travelers thanks to English, French, and Creole as official languages, the safe environment, and the easy taxi access from Victoria to the beaches. A do-it-yourself day by taxi to Beau Vallon or to an Anse Intendance beach works well for confident travelers.

Book through the ship or a reputable operator for inter-island ferry-and-tour combinations, especially for Praslin and La Digue if not directly called. The same goes for snorkeling and diving boat trips, and combined Vallée de Mai and Anse Lazio days on Praslin.

English, French, and Creole are all official, the rupee is the currency (Euros and US dollars often accepted), and tipping is at European norms (around 10 percent). Try the Creole seafood, octopus curries, and tropical fruits. The Seychelles is environmentally protected, so respect coral and beach rules. For more, see our guide to cruise shore excursions.

Sample Itineraries

A 7-to-10-night Seychelles cruise on a smaller luxury or expedition line from Mahe sails between Mahe, Praslin, La Digue, and outer islands, from around $5,999 per person.

A 14-to-21-night Indian Ocean grand voyage on Silversea, Oceania, or Regent includes the Seychelles alongside Mauritius and East African ports, from around $7,999 per person.

An MSC or Costa voyage through the region during regional deployment offers the value option when available, from lower fares. Compare current sailings on the deals page before you book.

Packing & Practical Tips

Pack light, breathable tropical clothing for the year-round warmth, plus swimwear (essential), cover-ups for beach-to-restaurant transitions, and a light layer for air-conditioned dining. Comfortable walking shoes for Vallée de Mai and the small towns. Bring strong reef-safe sun protection, snorkel gear (or rent ashore), insect repellent, and a small daypack.

The Seychelles uses the rupee (Euros and US dollars often accepted) and the Type G plug (UK-style), so US and EU travelers should bring an adaptor. Cards work in tourism. Tap water is generally safe in tourist areas. The environment is strictly protected, so respect coral and turtle nesting rules. For the full list, see our cruise packing guide.

The Verdict

The Seychelles is one of the most pristine and beautiful cruise destinations on Earth. The granite-and-turquoise beaches of La Digue, the coco de mer forest of Praslin, and the easy access from Mahe combine into a near-perfect Indian Ocean stop. The combination of stunning scenery, accessible luxury, easy English-and-French language, and exceptional snorkeling makes it stand out among Indian Ocean destinations. It works best on luxury or expedition itineraries with real island time.

Book a Seychelles cruise if you want world-leading Indian Ocean scenery on a smaller, luxury-leaning ship, ideally on Silversea, Oceania, or Ponant for the dedicated island access. Prioritize La Digue if it is in your itinerary, visit Praslin’s Vallée de Mai, and respect the strict environmental rules. For the best weather and clearest water, sail in April, May, October, or November.
