A Hawaii cruise visits the most isolated island chain on Earth, a US state in the central Pacific. The volcanic Big Island, the resort beaches of Maui, the lush cliffs of Kauai, and the history-laden Oahu (Honolulu and Pearl Harbor) combine into an island-hopping dream. Hawaii is cruised two main ways. The first is Norwegian’s year-round inter-island Pride of America from Honolulu; the second is round-trip or repositioning sailings from the US West Coast and across the Pacific to Tahiti.

For cruisers, Hawaii delivers active volcanoes, world-famous beaches, lush rainforest, big-wave surf, and a deep Polynesian and US-Pacific history, all with the convenience of the US dollar and English. Oahu brings Honolulu, Waikiki, and the moving Pearl Harbor memorials, while Maui offers the road to Hana and Haleakala. The Big Island has the active Kilauea volcano, and Kauai delivers the spectacular Na Pali Coast. The inter-island Norwegian sailing maximizes time in the islands themselves.

Best Time to Cruise

Hawaii enjoys warm, pleasant weather year-round thanks to its tropical location, so there is no bad time to cruise. The drier months run roughly April through October, while winter (November through March) is slightly wetter, especially on the windward sides.

Cruise demand peaks in the winter (December through April), when mainland travelers escape the cold, and in summer. The best value tends to sit in the autumn shoulder of September through November. Browse the latest Oceania cruise deals for shoulder-season sailings.

Winter brings the famous big-wave surf to the north shores and is peak whale-watching season (humpbacks visit December through April). Summer is drier and great for beaches. For the best mix of weather and value, sail in the autumn shoulder, though Hawaii genuinely rewards a cruise in any season given its year-round warmth.

Top Cruise Ports

Honolulu (Oahu)

Honolulu, on Oahu, is Hawaii’s capital and main cruise port, the turnaround base for the inter-island sailings and a key call on Pacific itineraries. Ships dock close to downtown and the famous Waikiki Beach.

The draws are the moving Pearl Harbor memorials (USS Arizona and the Battleship Missouri) and Waikiki Beach. Add the Diamond Head crater hike, the historic Iolani Palace, and the North Shore surf beaches. Insider tip: book the Pearl Harbor visit well ahead and go early, since the USS Arizona Memorial is deeply moving and the timed tickets sell out fast. It is the essential Oahu excursion for most cruisers.

Maui (Kahului)

Maui, reached via the port of Kahului, is Hawaii’s resort-and-scenery island, famous for beaches, whale watching, the road to Hana, and the dormant Haleakala volcano. It is a highlight of any Hawaii cruise.

The draws are the winding road to Hana with its waterfalls and the sunrise or daytime visit to Haleakala’s summit crater. Add the whale watching in winter and the beaches around Wailea and Kaanapali. Insider tip: a Haleakala summit visit gives an otherworldly volcanic-crater view above the clouds, while in winter the Maui whale-watching is among the best in the world. Match your excursion to the season for the standout Maui experience.

The Big Island (Hilo and Kona)

Hawaii’s Big Island, with ports at Hilo on the wet east side and Kona on the dry west side, is home to the active Kilauea volcano and dramatically varied scenery. The two ports open onto very different sides of the island.

The draws are Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the active Kilauea from Hilo, plus the Kona coffee farms and historic sites from Kona. Add the black-sand beaches and the manta ray night snorkels off Kona. Insider tip: from Hilo, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the essential excursion to see the active volcanic terrain. From Kona, the evening manta ray snorkel is a genuinely unforgettable and unusual Big Island experience.

Which Cruise Lines Sail Here

Hawaii is cruised both inter-island and on Pacific routes, so a strong lineup operates. Norwegian leads the inter-island market with the US-flagged Pride of America, which sails round-trip from Honolulu year-round. It is the only ship offering a full inter-island Hawaii itinerary, usually the best way to maximize island time.

The premium and mass-market lines call on West Coast round-trips and repositioning routes. Princess, Holland America, Carnival, Celebrity, and Royal Caribbean include Hawaii on sailings from California and on transpacific voyages.

The luxury lines include Hawaii on Pacific crossings and Tahiti routes, with Oceania and Regent calling on grand voyages. Most Hawaii cruises are either 7-night inter-island sailings on Norwegian or 14-to-18-night round-trips from the US West Coast. Read our Norwegian review, our Princess review, and our Holland America review to match a line to your trip.

Shore Excursion Tips

Hawaii is one of the easiest cruise destinations for travelers, with English, the US dollar, US infrastructure, high safety, and easy car rental at each port. A do-it-yourself day by rental car works very well for confident drivers wanting to explore each island independently.

Book through the ship or a reputable operator for Pearl Harbor, which needs timed tickets and transfers. The same goes for the road to Hana and Haleakala on Maui, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. Add the Na Pali Coast boat tours on Kauai, where timing matters against the ship.

English and Hawaiian are spoken and the US dollar is the currency, with cards accepted everywhere and standard US tipping expected (15-20 percent). Try poke, plate lunch, shave ice, and Kona coffee. Respect the ocean (strong currents) and Hawaiian cultural sites. US citizens need no passport for the inter-island sailing; others follow US entry rules. For more, see our guide to cruise shore excursions.

Sample Itineraries

A 7-night inter-island Hawaii cruise on Norwegian’s Pride of America round-trip from Honolulu visits Maui, the Big Island (Hilo and Kona), and Kauai, from around $1,499 per person. It is the best way to maximize island time.

A 14-to-16-night round-trip Hawaii cruise on Princess, Holland America, or Carnival from California crosses the Pacific with several Hawaii calls, from around $1,599 per person.

A 16-to-18-night Hawaii and Tahiti cruise on Princess, Oceania, or Regent links the two Pacific island groups, from around $2,999 per person. Compare current sailings on the deals page before you book.

Packing & Practical Tips

Pack light, breathable tropical clothing for the year-round warmth, plus swimwear (essential), reef-safe sun protection (now required by Hawaii law), and a hat. Bring sturdy shoes for the volcano and trail excursions, a light rain jacket for the windward sides, water shoes, and a light layer for the cool Haleakala summit.

Hawaii uses the US dollar and standard US Type A/B plugs, so US travelers need nothing extra while others need an adaptor. Cards work everywhere and US tipping applies. Tap water is safe. Reef-safe sunscreen is legally required to protect the coral. US citizens need no passport for the inter-island cruise; others follow US entry rules. For the full list, see our cruise packing guide.

The Verdict

Hawaii is one of the most rewarding and easy cruise destinations anywhere. It combines active volcanoes, world-famous beaches, the moving Pearl Harbor history, and lush island scenery with the convenience of the US dollar, English, and excellent infrastructure. The inter-island Norwegian sailing maximizes time in the islands themselves, while West Coast and Tahiti routes weave Hawaii into a bigger Pacific voyage.

Book the Norwegian inter-island cruise from Honolulu if you want to maximize island time, or a West Coast round-trip if you prefer fewer port days and more relaxed sea days. Prioritize Pearl Harbor on Oahu, match Maui to the season (whales in winter, Haleakala year-round), and see the active volcano from Hilo. Hawaii rewards a cruise in any season, with autumn the best value.
