A Greenland cruise reaches the world’s largest island, a Danish autonomous territory of just 56,000 people spread across an area larger than Mexico. Almost all of Greenland is covered by the inland ice sheet, with cruise ships hugging the west coast where the small settlements sit between fjords. Most cruises focus on the spectacular Disko Bay region, with Ilulissat (and its UNESCO-listed Icefjord), Nuuk (the capital), Qaqortoq, and Sisimiut as the main ports.

For cruisers, Greenland delivers some of the most extraordinary Arctic scenery on Earth. Enormous icebergs calve from the Ilulissat Icefjord (which produces around 10 percent of all Greenlandic icebergs), with the Eqi Glacier face nearby. Add the colorful clapboard houses of the small Inuit settlements and brilliant Arctic wildlife (humpback whales, seals, occasional polar bears in the far north). The silent immensity of the inland ice completes the picture. Most cruises are expedition-style or small premium ships; mainstream large ships only occasionally call. The country is genuinely off the standard cruise circuit.

Best Time to Cruise

Greenland has an Arctic climate, so the cruise season is tight: June through September. Most ships operate July through August, when the pack ice has retreated enough to access the main ports. June and September are shoulder months with limited sailings and more weather risk.

Peak season is July through August. The best value sits in late June or early September when expedition lines run shoulder voyages. Browse the latest Americas cruise deals for the limited Greenland sailings available.

July and August bring the most reliable weather, with long Arctic days (24-hour daylight north of the Arctic Circle in midsummer). Temperatures are comparatively mild (40s and 50s F), with the best pack-ice conditions. June can still have ice access issues; September brings the first autumn storms and northern lights returning. For most cruisers, mid-July to mid-August is the sweet spot, with late August offering shoulder value and the first chance of northern lights.

Top Cruise Ports

Ilulissat (Disko Bay, UNESCO Icefjord)

Ilulissat in Disko Bay is Greenland’s most spectacular cruise port and the standout reason most cruisers come to Greenland. The town of 4,500 people sits next to the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord, where the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier calves enormous icebergs into the bay continuously.

The draws are the Ilulissat Icefjord walking trails (the standout half-day experience, with boardwalks leading to the iceberg-choked fjord) and the Icefjord Centre with its excellent Arctic exhibits. Add the boat trips through the icebergs (often combined with whale-watching for humpbacks feeding on krill). The Eqi Glacier excursion to the calving glacier face (longer day by boat) and the small colorful houses of the town itself round it out. Insider tip: the Ilulissat Icefjord boardwalk plus an iceberg-cruise boat trip is the unmissable Greenland combination. The giant icebergs (some 4 storeys high above water and 10 times bigger below) deliver visuals no other cruise stop on Earth can match. Book the boat trip early since slots are limited and demand is high.

Nuuk (the capital)

Nuuk, Greenland’s capital and largest city with around 19,000 people, is the country’s most accessible port and the cultural heart of modern Greenland. The town has a strong Inuit and Danish-mixed identity, with the National Museum holding ancient Inuit artifacts and the colorful old colonial harbor.

The draws are the Greenland National Museum (with the famous Qilakitsoq mummies, naturally preserved 500-year-old Inuit) and the colorful old colonial harbor at Kolonihavnen. Add the cathedral, the Nuuk Art Museum, the Sermitsiaq mountain hikes, and the local fish-and-seal-meat tasting tours. Insider tip: the National Museum is the standout Nuuk indoor experience. The Qilakitsoq mummies (the best-preserved pre-Columbian human remains in the Americas) are genuinely worth the visit. Combine the museum with a walk around the colorful old harbor for a balanced 3-to-4 hour port day.

Qaqortoq and Sisimiut

Qaqortoq in southern Greenland and Sisimiut north of Nuuk are smaller traditional port calls. Each offers charming colorful houses, with the Norse ruins of Hvalsey near Qaqortoq, and the Stone and Man sculpture project carved into rocks throughout Qaqortoq town.

The draws are the Stone and Man rock-carving sculpture trail in Qaqortoq and the nearby Hvalsey Norse church ruins (one of the best-preserved Viking sites in Greenland). Add the Sisimiut Museum with its traditional Inuit huts and kayaks. Round it out with the Sisimiut dog-sledding (in season) and rugged coastal walks, and the small-town life that gives a real sense of Greenlandic identity. Insider tip: Qaqortoq’s Stone and Man sculpture trail is a free and easy walking-tour experience. Around 30 carved stones spread around the small colorful town give a structured way to explore on a port day; pack waterproof shoes for the slippery rocks.

Which Cruise Lines Sail Here

Greenland is primarily an expedition-cruise destination, with the expedition specialists leading the market. Hurtigruten/HX leads the volume with regular Greenland expedition voyages, with Viking, Lindblad, Quark, and Ponant also operating dedicated Greenland and Arctic Canada combination sailings.

The luxury expedition lines including Silversea, Seabourn, and Scenic Eclipse include Greenland on Arctic and high-latitude itineraries, with smaller ships and excellent expedition guides.

Mainstream cruise lines occasionally call, with Holland America, Princess, and Cunard including Greenland on transatlantic crossings, summer-Arctic, and grand-voyage itineraries on larger ships. Most Greenland cruises are 10-to-21-night Arctic expedition voyages from Iceland, Canada, or rarely a US East Coast port. Read our Hurtigruten review, our Viking Ocean review, and our Silversea review to match a line to your trip.

Shore Excursion Tips

Greenland is largely a ship-organized destination. The country has very limited independent-cruise-tourism infrastructure and the settlements are tiny. English is more limited outside major tourism, and the headline excursions (iceberg boat trips, Eqi Glacier visits) require coordinated transport.

Book through the ship or a reputable expedition-line operator for all major excursions. That includes the Ilulissat Icefjord boat trips, the Eqi Glacier day-trips, the Nuuk cultural tours, and any helicopter or kayak excursions where weather, ice, and timing all matter critically.

Greenlandic (Kalaallisut) is the official language with Danish widely used and English in tourism, and the Danish krone is the currency, with cards used everywhere. Tipping is not standard in Greenland (service is included). Try mattak (whale skin), Greenlandic halibut, musk-ox, and the local Greenlandic coffee with spirits. Tap water is excellent. For more, see our guide to cruise shore excursions.

Sample Itineraries

A 10-to-14-night Greenland expedition cruise on Hurtigruten, Viking, or Lindblad from Iceland or Canada covers Disko Bay, Ilulissat, and Nuuk, from around $4,999 per person.

A 14-to-21-night Arctic combination cruise links Greenland with Iceland, Svalbard, or Arctic Canada on Quark, Ponant, or Silversea Expeditions, from around $7,999 per person.

A summer transatlantic crossing on Holland America, Princess, or Cunard that includes a Greenland stop alongside Iceland and Canada, running 14 to 21 nights, from around $2,999 per person. Compare current sailings on the deals page before you book.

Packing & Practical Tips

Pack layered cold-weather clothing for the Arctic climate: waterproof and windproof outer layer essential, fleece mid-layers, thermal base layers. Add waterproof and warm gloves, a warm hat, and sturdy waterproof walking boots for slippery rocky terrain and boat-landing wet feet.

Greenland uses Type C, E, F, and K plugs (Danish 230V), so most non-European visitors need an adaptor. Cards work everywhere; cash is rarely needed. Tipping is not standard. Tap water is excellent. Pack a high-quality camera and binoculars, since wildlife and icebergs are the visual headliners; expedition lines often provide loaner parkas and boots. For the full list, see our cruise packing guide.

The Verdict

Greenland is one of the most extraordinary cruise destinations on Earth, delivering Arctic scenery and Inuit culture you cannot match anywhere else. The UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord with its enormous icebergs and the Eqi Glacier calving face lead the way. The colorful Inuit settlements, the Nuuk National Museum with the Qilakitsoq mummies, and the silent immensity of the inland ice sheet round out a once-in-a-lifetime trip. The tight cruise season (June through September), the high prices, and the largely-expedition-only market reflect the operational reality of cruising the Arctic, not a marketing premium.

Book a Greenland expedition cruise if you want the most spectacular Arctic destination on Earth and you accept the higher cost and expedition-line format. Hurtigruten or Viking suit the established Greenland product; Silversea or Seabourn suit a more premium expedition experience. Make Ilulissat the absolute priority, ideally with both the boardwalk and a boat trip. Sail mid-July through mid-August for the most reliable Arctic conditions; late August offers shoulder value with the first chance of northern lights.
